Leadership

the Alma Mater of the Nation has been a place where ambitious students learn to lead lives of principled achievement and purpose.

William & Mary enjoys a rich history of producing leaders who have made a meaningful impact on the world. It has a strong reputation for creating graduates who think rigorously, look beyond boundaries, uncover new opportunities and solve problems creatively. By underscoring the importance of leadership as a core theme and a major institutional focus, William & Mary will continue to prepare graduates to welcome change and challenge, to deal with uncertainty and ambiguity, and to embrace diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.

James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, attended William & Mary until 1776, when he left to fight in the Revolutionary War. He served as governor of Virginia and held two Cabinet positions simultaneously — secretary of war and secretary of state. His policies continue to make meaningful impact in the United States and around the world. Through the campaign, the Alma Mater of the Nation — James Monroe’s alma mater — will raise funds to continue his legacy of leadership in the 21st century.
