Kaylee Gum J.D. '16

The rise of ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) during Kaylee’s 12-week internship in Iraq did not impede her efforts. She spent the summer of 2014 working on legal aid development within Iraq, and with her dedication to the work combined with her desire to lead in international law, there was no way she was going to step away from the job. As a second-year student at the William & Mary Law School, she was one of only 100 students to participate in the School’s international internship since the program began in 2002, but the first person to venture to Iraq.

Kaylee volunteers at the Lewis B. Puller, Jr. Veterans Benefits Clinic, which assists veterans filing claims for disability compensation with the Department of Veterans Affairs. After growing up in a military family, she enlisted in the Air Force ROTC program and is now a second lieutenant and reservist on an Air Force Judge Advocate General (JAG) educational delay. After her time at William & Mary Law School, Kaylee will serve four years with the Air Force JAG Corps before continuing her career in international law.
